Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell Are Reviving the Rom-Com

It seems like Zoey Deutch is everywhere these days. Between the meet-cute comedy Set It Up, the biting social media satire Not Okay, and crime thriller The Outfit, the Los Angeles native has found herself at the center of an impressively diverse slate of films as of late. Her newest project to hit streaming is Something From Tiffany’s, a sweet holiday romance, produced by Reese Witherspoon and adapted from the novel by Melissa Hill. To help her make sense of the madness, Deutch called up her former Set It Up beau Glen Powell, currently starring in the film Devotion, to talk about finding that elusive work/life balance, the peaks and pitfalls of working with your heroes, and driving the rom-com renaissance together.

Zoey Deutch Is in Her Dream Come True at Russ & Daughters

THRILLIST – The ‘Not Okay’ star returns to the recently reopened NYC staple to talk her new film, comedy, and the comfort of matzo ball soup.

Every year for her birthday, Zoey Deutch gets a tattoo from Los Angeles’ renowned, cool-girl-favourite tattoo artist Doctor Woo. The actress, now starring in Hulu’s scammer comedy Not Okay, has tattoos of her dog Maybelle, a scorpion, a moon and stars, 818 to represent her hometown of the Valley, and several other words and phrases. On her ankle, she also has one of her deepest loves: a bowl of matzo ball soup. Done in Doctor Woo’s signature single-needle style, there’s even a split in the matzo ball and carrots in the broth.

She makes a point to show off the tat at the beloved Jewish institution Russ & Daughters on New York City’s Lower East Side, as the staff brings out her go-to order, and fourth-generation co-owner Niki Russ Federman says hello. Plated in the back booth of the cafe-which just reopened for dining for the first time since 2020-are latkes, pickles (old and new), bialis, bagels, gravlox, an egg cream, ample seltzer, and, of course, matzo ball soup. “I feel like I’m in my dream!” Deutch exclaims when she takes a seat.

Zoey Deutch and Lea Thompson on Playing the “Worst Versions” of Themselves, Together

INSTYLE – They may sometimes ‘drive each other crazy,’ but this mother-daughter duo are still each other’s favorite co-stars.

It’s no accident that actress and producer Zoey Deutch, 26, is following in her family’s vocational footsteps. Her father is director Howard Deutch, who met her mother, famed actress Lea Thompson, when she starred in his 1987 film, Some Kind of Wonderful. (The creative legacy extends to previous generations as well — her grandfather Murray Deutch was a music executive who discovered Buddy Holly.)

So, when the pandemic hit, the younger Deutch did not have to turn far to find collaborators for her latest project, a 10-episode scripted podcast for Audible called A Total Switch Show. Conceived by Deutch and her friends, executive producer Gavin Polone and writer Matt Powers, the dark, fast-paced comedy tackles the familiar trope of what happens when a mother and daughter — Deutch and Thompson, naturally — switch bodies. Deutch’s 30-year-old sister, Madelyn (a polymath who also took these photos near their home in L.A.), serves as a writer on the series, and the stellar cast includes Bradley Whitford, Judy Greer, and Bobby Moynihan.

Deutch, in London, where she was busy practicing her 1950s Chicago accent for the upcoming film The Outfit, and Thompson, in her daughter’s childhood bedroom in L.A., got together via Zoom to unpack the evolution of their careers and making art together.
